6 Reasons to Choose Natural Headache Cures Over Medications for Migraines

Headache sufferers can live their lives in frequent misery. While there are many natural cures for headaches that can help in the long run, tools for immediate relief of headaches are a strong need.

Far too many headache sufferers turn to medications to cure their headaches, but in no situation does the medication actually fix what is causing the headache in the first place. Many drugs use to treat headaches merely stop one brain cell from communicating with its neighbor, but do not make the original, problematic brain cell any healthier.

One very common medication used to treat headaches (most often migraine type headaches, although it is not uncommon for a prescription to be written for a tension-type headache as well) is amitriptyline, the most common prescription being Elavil. This class of drugs blocks both the serotonin and norepinephrine uptake in the brain (SNRI). As noted, this pathway has little to do with what actually causes the headaches in the first place, but can stop to progression of the signal from one brain cell to the next.

While there are many natural approaches for headache sufferers to use that can have strong effects on symptom, frequency and duration of the headaches, controlling stress remains one of the most powerful tools.

Acute stress is actually very good for the brain. If you think about it, this makes a lot of sense. If we had a Saber tooth tiger jump out of the underbrush looking to attack us, the last thing we want is for our brain to get all fuzzy and kick off a headache. Instead, acute stress snaps our brain and the way our neurons are firing into attention. Otherwise, as a species, we wouldn't be here on this planet.

Chronic stress, on the other hand, has a very detrimental role in brain function. Much of it is focused around the hormone cortisol and one of the derivatives of cortisol called tetrahydrodeoxycorticosterone (THDOC). In acute situations this compound has a strongly anti-seizure, anti-migraine effect. However, in the long term with chronic stress, the same compound becomes very pro-seizure and pro-migraine. So, stress is a major trigger of both headaches and seizures. This is most likely due to this particular hormone.

So, it all boils back down to needing to manage our stress with a variety of different tools to keep stress levels under control. Ideally, any stress we experience should be the short term brain protective stress rather than the long term chronic brain damaging stress.

There's a lot of ways to calm the brain and keep one neuron from inappropriately firing to its unsuspecting neighbor and creating a migraine or a seizure.

One very powerful method to calm the brain that has been around for several thousand years is meditation. It can be as complex as a meditation course or can be as simple as a relaxation CD that you'd buy used at a bookstore for $5. The choice of methods is up to the individual.

A recent study compared the effectiveness of using amitriptyline vs hypnotic relaxation that was done in the neurologist's office. The results were very encouraging:

1) Over half (58%) chose hypnotic relaxation over the drug approach
2) The patients who used higher levels of analgesics were more likely to choose amitriptyline
3) When given a choice to later switch groups, over 5X the number of patients chose to switch over to hypnosis vs drugs
4) 74% of patients in hypnotic relaxation group had a good response (50% or greater improvement)
5) Only 58% of patients in the amitriptyline group had the same response
6) Long term adherence with hypnotic relaxation was greater than the drug

Meditation has been shown to actually calm the brain. These are based on EEG studies where we see less brain activity during meditation. Realize that there's no other time that the brain truly quiets down. Even in sleep the brain is very active. It's only during meditation that we start to see brain waves and brain activity slow down. So, meditation is wonderful for affecting that in a positive way.

Other ways are biofeedback. There is actually a device called the RESPeRATE that's FDA approved to lower blood pressure and is basically a biofeedback device for breathing. The device is used by putting on headphones and listening to the tones that indicate when to breathe in and when to breathe out. During this time period, you find that your focus is entirely on your breathing. Once that happens, you're not focusing on anything else, which is essentially a form of meditation that allows the brain to quiet down. In our office we've had people who are in the middle of an anxiety attack use the RESPeRATE. In 15 minutes they are a completely relaxed person.

There are other devices similar to the RESPeRATE. One uses visual stimuli where you focus on certain designs with specific music playing in the background, and you find that the focus becomes so intense on what you are hearing and seeing that it gives the brain a chance to rest and not think about everything else that contributes to your stress levels.

We live in a society that stresses us out beyond anything that any society has ever come across before. It's work, it's home - these stressors don't ever seem to go away. Our body deals well with acute stress, but it's the chronic stress that really starts to break down our brain.

These tools and others can help to calm your brain, but you also need to take a good look at your life and what is stressing you and do whatever it takes to start to remove the stresses or learn to not let them go. Quite frankly, whatever you're stressing about today, and probably the next 10 things you're going to stress about tomorrow, really aren't going to matter. They're going to happen whether or not you stress about them. However, we seem to stress more about the things that are most out of our control. Does this not seem ridiculous? If they're out of our control, what's the point of stressing over them? And, there is no doubt that your stress levels are destroying your brain slowly, piece by agonizing piece.

The Truth About Migraines

You may have heard of someone that wakes up early in the morning with extreme pain behind one of their eyes. The individual then tries to perform their normal daily activities, but can't because of the pain and difficulty focusing. The person feels hungry but doesn't feel like eating breakfast. The person avoids the kitchen all together because the smell of food makes them nauseous. The individual seeks solitude and tries to avoid any kind of sounds. This is a common daily occurrence for a person with a migraine headache.

Migraines may be minor for some people but extremely debilitating for others. Migraines can prevent one from working or performing their normal daily tasks at home. Some people with migraine headaches may have a warning sign come on before the headache. This is called an aura. The aura often begins approximately 30 minutes before the headache comes on. Those experiencing an aura often describe it as spots, wavy lines or flashing lights.

The typical time frame for migraine headaches ranges from four to 72 hours if untreated. The frequency and time frame is different from person to person. The symptom of a migraine is often described as throbbing and is usually located on one side of the head. Some migraine sufferers may experience the headache on both sides. The pain is usually worsened by physical activity. Nausea and vomiting may also occur with the headache. Migraine sufferers are often sensitive to light, noise and smell.

Prodromes are also common with migraine headaches. These usually occur one or two days before the headache comes on. These are subtle symptoms that can signal a migraine will be coming. These subtle symptoms might include constipation, diarrhea, food cravings, depression or neck pain. Postdromes may also occur after a migraine is over. This is considered the final phase and the typical symptom is exhaustion or feeling euphoric.

Brain Damaged From Migraines or Seizures? Try These 6 Tips

In my experience, many migraine or seizure sufferers do not fully understand that, even when headaches or seizures are not occurring, there is brain damage occurring. Luckily, there are many proven ways to help protect your brain from these dangerous conditions.

With that being said, it is common for mainstream medicine to recommend medications that control the seizure or headache, but do nothing to help protect the brain. This is obviously a severe shortcoming and a failing in the way we treat migraines and seizures in society today. It is indescribably important for a patient to understand that the ultimate responsibility for their health lies within. It does NOT lie with the physician. They can guide and coach you, but the job of improving the health of your brain is yours alone.

Brain cells require a massive amount of energy (in the form of ATP) to function normally. The mitochondria inside of a cell is where this valuable ATP is made. You can't make all this energy needed to run a healthy brain cell without waste byproducts. Imagine lighting a fire to cook or heat water. When you do this, smoke is going to be produced as a by-product of the fire. And we all have heard that in a house fire more victims die of smoke inhalation rather than the fire itself. So this smoke can be dangerous. In physiology, this "smoke" produced as a by-product of generating ATP is termed "free radicals."

You may have heard of free radicals before. These free radicals are hostile little molecules that damage anything they touch. For those of you that used to play with fireworks as a child, the little "buzzing bee" type of firework always reminds me of a free radical. When they were lit, these little fireworks started to spin very rapidly in a circle, faster and faster, spitting small flames out the side. The end result is a small circle of fire spinning and buzzing all over the ground. So, picture this little buzzing bee molecule bouncing around inside of your cell, damaging anything it touches. Proteins in the cell, your DNA, even the mitochondria that produces the free radicals in the first place while making ATP. All can be damaged by free radicals.

Complicating this bad situation is the fact that the mitochondria do not do a very good job of protecting themselves from free radical damage. So the one part of the cell that we really, really want to protect and keep from being damaged, can't really protect itself very well. Too much damage and the mitochondria itself dies off, leaving the poor little neuron with less ATP factories to run the way it's supposed to.

This leads to what I refer to as a "sick neuron."

In general, if we stop a sick neuron from communicating with its healthy neighbor by loading people up with drugs and stopping the communication, we think that we've been successful. All we've done is stop the communication, but we haven't fixed the sick neuron. In many cases, that neuron continues to degenerate. If one neuron is going to be sick, it is highly likely that the situation is present for other neurons to be sick as well. Merely controlling the headache or the seizure with medications, rather than a complete program to heal the brain cells, is not optional. It is required if you'd like to truly improve the state of the way your brain is functioning and protect your cognitive ability for years to come.

Given that the mitochondria are so incredibly important in the process of brain health, what can we do to protect them inside of our brain cells? Here are some ideas.

1) Manage stress - is what you are stressing about as important as damaging your brain? Probably not.

2) Avoid environmental chemicals. There is a barrage of more than 82,000 chemicals registered with the FDA that we are exposed to on a daily basis. This ranges from having your house sprayed for bugs or weeds, to all the pesticides, fungicides and herbicides that are used on our conventionally grown produce. We have tens of thousands of chemicals in our environment that we were never been exposed to before and that our bodies are unsure of how to eliminate. As an example, there are the flame retardants built into things like clothing, mattresses, pillows, dog beds and furniture. As of July 2007, mattresses were required to have a much higher level of flame resistance; the amount of chemicals required to make it this flame resistant are much higher. These chemicals than show up in our bloodstream and may contribute to health problems by destroying our mitochondria. Another example is the use of nonstick cooking surfaces, which is achieved through the use of chemicals, which also show up in the bloodstream.

3) Avoid ALL artificial sweeteners. Period.

4) Avoid exposure to heavy metals like lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury and aluminum. This can be achieved by taking your shoes off at the door, avoiding certain fish known to be high in mercury (like albacore tuna, ahi and swordfish) and staying away from cigarette smoke and areas where people commonly smoke.

5) Supplements like L-carnitine, Coenzyme Q10, whey protein and resveratrol have been shown to improve the health of our mitochondria.

#6 is clearly one of the most powerful methods to improve both the number and function of our mitochondria: Calorie restriction without nutrient restriction. This means that your 1200 calories / day comes from broccoli, not a Big Mac and supersized fries. With this approach, our cells have to use every scrap of glucose and every nutrient to function. Our cells run a tighter ship, creating more efficient and greater numbers of mitochondria. The opposite is true with too many calories-our cells get lazy and mitochondrial function heads south.

A study in the April issue of Free Radical Biology and Research provides further support of the concept that calorie restriction stimulates the production of more mitochondria in our brain cells, thereby protecting our brains and potentially reducing both the frequency and severity of migraine headaches and seizures, while working on truly healing the brain and eliminating these conditions.

What You Need to Know About Migraines in Children

Migraine headache symptoms in children are very common. As they grow older, the chronic headaches will eventually disappear. As a matter of fact, it is quite rare for anyone above fifty years old to get a headache. A large percentage of headaches in children are those attributed to migraines, sinus headaches, and chronic tension headaches. So, don't confuse right away your kid's frequent headache complaints to brain tumors since those cases are very, very rare.

When headaches occur in children, they are often bilateral (in the front temporal lobe) in nature and are of the non-throbbing types. Migraine with aura, or headache accompanied by visual or sensory symptoms like seeing lights, is also rare for those who are less than eight years old. Nausea and vomiting are common, most especially in young children. Thus, if your kid is prone to headache, then have him avoid strong or blinking light, noise, strong odors, and excessive movement. In most cases, the best relief is not to give any medication but to just let the kid sleep and rest. If medication is needed, a baby aspirin or mild paracetamol is almost always the solution.

The most common causes of headaches in children are those that are brought about by illnesses, infection, colds, or fever symptoms. In addition, sinusitis, pharyngitis, and ear infections can also cause headaches. The headaches will go away once the primary medical disorder has been cured. For example, once you get the ear infection treated, the frequent headaches that go with it will also disappear. Relieving Stress Migraines and Related Headaches

Stress headaches usually manifest themselves as stress induced migraines and are one of the most common forms of migraine as well as one of the most dangerous. Modern day life is stressful, it is a fact, but while it is impossible to avoid stress it is not impossible to handle it and the ability to handle it will reduce the incidence of stress induced migraines.

Regular migraines from stress can lead to other health complications and have a terribly draining effect on your body. That is why it is crucial to learn how to deal with them effectively. We all know that life can be stressful enough without adding the fear of a crippling migraine into the mix.

Migraines - Not Just Your Average Headache!

There's nothing quite so debilitating as a headache right in the middle of a day that should have been productive. Your kids are screaming or there's work to be done or you're trying to sleep, and out of nowhere the headache bus takes a wrong turn and collides with your head. While average headaches can slow you down a bit, migraine headaches can stop you in your tracks and knock you straight onto your back. Roughly 23 percent of the American population suffer from migraine headache. The statistics say that migraines have a slightly feminine predisposition. Women are three times as likely as men to experience the onset of headache. Migraine is most common in the thirty-five to forty-five age group.

So how are migraines different from your average, run of the mill headache? Migraine headache is usually characterized by pulsing or pounding in one side of the cranium. These headaches are caused by excessive dilation or widening of the blood vessels in the head. Roughly fifty percent of sufferers experience prodrome or symptoms that occur prior to the headache. Prodrome symptoms can include excessive fatigue or sleepiness, digestive issues, irritability, and cravings for particular foods.

Classic types of Migraine can be preempted by particular signs or symptoms referred to as auras. Auras may refer to visual changes such as blurriness or spotting, increased sensitivity to light, increased sensitivity to sound, increased sensitivity to smell, nausea, or vomiting. Classic migraines typically last from two to five hours, with the common migraine lasting between one and four days. Some migraine sufferers may even experience vaso-motor instability or inability to control body temperature. Vaso-motor instability is commonly seen in menopausal women in the form of hot flashes.

So how are migraines commonly treated? There are a number of different treatment interventions for migraine headache. Traditional allopathic medicine is fond of utilizing antidepressants (tri-cyclic), beta-blockers, and calcium-channel-blockers to decrease the incidence of headache. The problem with these types of pharmacological solutions is the host of side effects that are often encountered.

Because this article is being written by a chiropractor, we're going to focus on the more natural treatment options. First and foremost we want to look at the possibility of a food allergy. Citrus fruits, tyramine (commonly found in aged, smoked or pickled foods), gluten, dairy products such as eggs, milk and cheeses, chocolate, beer (brewers yeast), and wine are common triggers for migraine headache. Diet diaries and elimination diets are commonly used to evaluate the possibility or presence of a food allergy trigger. Environmental toxins can also play a role in the incidence of onset. Harsh cleaning chemicals and cigarette smoke have been indicated in migraine pathology.

Migraine sufferers often experience increased blood platelet aggregation. Platelet aggregation can impede the blood flow in and around the brain. In addition to decreasing blood flow, the clumping of platelets stimulates the release of seratonin. Seratonin can affect the dilation and constriction of blood vessels, triggering a migraine headache. Low seratonin levels are also correlated with reduced pain tolerance. Utilizing fish oil, garlic and ginger can help to inhibit platelet aggregation. Furthermore 5-Hydroxy-Tryptophan supplementation can help to elevate seratonin levels and reduce the incidence of migraine headache. Feverfew, a B-complex and magnesium supplementation have also proven to be beneficial for those individuals suffering from chronic migraine headache.

My Holistic Medical Experiences With Sugar: Migraines, Blood Sugar, and Intestinal Yeast Infections

My Beginnings with Holistic Medicine

Holistic medicine is everything that lies outside of Western conventional allopathic medicine. I can't possibly write on such a breadth of alternative health, nor am I qualified. My background and training is as a logical rational trained research scientist, a world where anything of value must be proven by double blind experimentally sound scientific studies.

In 1991, I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. This is quite unusual to have at age 50, as this disease, or Manic Depression as it is also called, usually doesn't strike past the age of 40. I was in clinical depression when my wife Marcia dragged me into Manhattan from our home on Long Island about an hour and a quarter drive by car. A friend of hers, our insurance agent Jerry, suggested that the Atkins Center could help. Robert Atkins M.D. died a few years ago, but back in 1991 he had a five or six storied building that was devoted to what he termed Complementary Medicine. Complementary meant that the good Dr. Atkins was adding certain holistic medical approaches to his internal medicine cardiology traditional training. Upon arrival early in the morning, I was given a 5 hour blood glucose tolerance to determine whether I was either hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) or hyperglycemic (possibly diabetic), blood was withdrawn for a variety of analyses, stool samples were collected, and food and other allergies were tested.

By the end of the day I had a bag full of vitamins, was told that I had yeast in my intestinal tract, and I went on the Atkins high protein, low carbohydrate diet. In that same year Marcia also dragged me to our first alternative medical conference in Manhattan. None of the approaches offered, even the orthomolecular psychiatry at the Atkins Center, relieved the clinical depression but it did start me on a journey with holistic medicine. Today, I practice my own brand of complementary medicine strictly for myself and for anyone else who wants to listen. Back in 1991 I didn't know that when I returned to Stony Brook University in August of 2000 to once again take up my professorial duties after a five year long term disability leave of absence from Bipolar Disorder that I would offer an eight hour course on nutritional medicine for the dental students. Much of what I have gleaned I put into this course on nutrition. I discuss a tiny bit of it here.

Sugar and Migraines

When I was twenty-seven and returned to Toronto from Israel with my Ph.D. in Biophysics, my headaches that I had all my life turned into migraines that I thought I would now have all my life. The migraines were much worse and my pain took on a new dimension of intensity. I had learned to tolerate pain since age four but this pain was excruciating. Migraine headaches are vascular in nature where one first triggers the vasoconstriction or squeezing of blood vessels in the head and neck followed by the vasodilation or expansion of blood vessels. During the second vascular phase, the blood vessels expand way past where they originally started and the poor migraine sufferer feels the horrific throbbing of the migraine. I don't know about giving birth but you can't imagine what the pain is like unless you are a migraine sufferer yourself.

After years of living with this physical pain, I read a book by a South American doctor in the early eighties on the relationship of sugar to migraines. I can't remember his name or the name of the book, but I do remember what the doctor wrote. He said that sugar triggered a migraine in certain individuals who were susceptible to the biochemical changes initiated by sugar. My science background allowed me to understand what the doctor was suggesting and I was looking for any explanation for my migraines as I was desperate. I had gone to the Headache Clinic at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, New York and no such explanation was offered. Basically, table sugar or the disaccharide sucrose gets broken down to the monosaccharides, glucose and fructose, in the body and causes insulin to be secreted by the pancreas.

The insulin is needed to transport the glucose breakdown sugar of the sucrose into our cells for energy, for work in our muscles, and for making triglycerides in our fat cells. A complex biochemical process takes place and there is an exchange of certain ions like magnesium and calcium across cell membranes that cause changes in the bioelectric character of the cells. If too much sucrose is broken down to glucose, the pancreas will secrete an overabundance of insulin. The insulin action can actually reduce the blood sugar levels to even lower levels than normally found in a person's bloodstream, sometimes to a level which is considered hypoglycemic. The decrease in blood glucose triggers the body to secrete the hormones, epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline), to cause the breakdown of glycogen stored in our cells in order to raise and rebalance our blood glucose levels. Blood glucose levels are actually our blood sugar levels but use of the word sugar is actually a misnomer because when we say sugar, we usually mean sucrose but it is the breakdown product of sucrose which is glucose. In any event, the secretion of epinephrine and norepinephrine can be a problem in some migraine sufferers whose blood vessels are sensitive and susceptible because these hormones or neurotransmitters, in addition to breaking down glycogen which is a string of glucose molecules, cause vasoconstriction of the skin blood vessels in the head, neck and shoulders. The consequence is that the migraine will commence and becomes difficult to arrest.

The South American doctor noted that shortly after taking sweets, the migraine began in individuals. Anywhere from forty-five to ninety minutes after the sweets would do it. I noted his findings in the early 1980s in my head but never attempted to carefully watch my foods. That is until the Atkins Center in 1991. I weighed 175 pounds at the beginning of my treatment at the Atkins Center. A couple of months later on a carbohydrate-restricted diet I was 150 pounds. Miraculously the migraines disappeared at the lower weight. When I gained the weight back, the migraines returned. Not a double blind study for a scientist although it convinced me that there was some validity to the relationship of sucrose to migraines. I still haven't seen any writings on this subject; however, I suggest you try it to see if there is a relationship of sugar to your migraines. There may not be. Migraines have other causes such as food allergies and genetics but it may be worth a try.

As a corollary to this story, my migraines had an additional component. I have done regression therapy, Primal Therapy, back to my mother's womb and have eliminated the emotional component of my migraines. I was able to feel my repressed rage in the womb. I no longer suffer from migraines though if I don't watch the sugar, and even if I do, I still get muscle pain. In Florida, I get pain that localizes in my temples which may be an entirely different kettle of fish or a horse of a different color. Thank God, the migraines have left. A lot of supermarket foods have sucrose or glucose in them, so you need to read labels. You are trying to keep all sugar containing products to a minimum. Let's move on to a related topic.

Sugar and Why You Can Gain Weight

Low carbohydrate was the whole premise for the Atkins diet to lose weight and it does work if you restrict your diet according to his suggestions. There has been a lot of controversy over the Atkins diet that you can read about elsewhere. With Dr. Atkin's death, the diet has lost some traction although there are still quite a few successful imitations out there. Some argue that the diet is not a healthy one and it is a truism that there is risk with everything. I'm back to my 175 pound weight but I do watch the sugar. The truth is that only about twenty-five percent of us can adequately metabolize sugar and get it out of our bodies quickly so that it doesn't cause weight gain. The rest of us can be affected by ingesting carbohydrates. It's also a fact that although total daily calories are important, you can reach a state when you are older when it's not how much you eat but what you eat. You probably ask yourself why you are gaining weight when you are hardly eating, or so you believe. The whole weight loss syndrome is like making your way through a mine field.

I don't want to get too technical or give you scientific explanations that I don't myself have at my fingertips, but have you ever heard of insulin resistance. Holistic doctors talk about insulin resistance in relation to becoming pre-diabetic and eventually diabetic and the relationship to being overweight. But why are some skinnier people diabetic while some overweight people do not have the illness?

When sugar is broken down, we said above that through a complex biochemical process the glucose gets transported into our cells. This happens not only for table sugar but also for a starch like a potato that gets broken down into glucose or any simple carbohydrate like too much popcorn at the movies. We need that glucose for all our cells to provide energy in the form of ATP when the glucose reacts with oxygen inside our cells. The brain needs lots of energy and requires about 20% of our blood glucose. In addition to energy our muscles need the glucose to convert to lactic acid so that they can function for example in throwing a punch or in exercise. Finally the glucose gets transported into our fat cells and initially forms triglycerides which can be assimilated, with the components of the triglyceride being converted into other lipids inside our fat cells. It is all of these lipids that form which can put on weight, especially if we are storing more fat than we are burning. In the Atkins diet, the low carbohydrate-high protein diet forces the body to burn fat and thus Atkins saw the weight loss in his patients. If the weight loss is dramatic as in a very overweight person then if you have Type 2 diabetes, and you may not, the diabetes can be partially or fully reversed since the pancreas still has the potential to produce insulin. At the higher weight with so much sugar in the bloodstream, it is necessary for your doctor to prescribe insulin for you. At the lower weight your own insulin can do the job in controlling the blood glucose.

Insulin resistance first happens for the energy in our cells and brain although we usually have enough to function. There is a slowing down of the rate of glucose transport (thus the amount of glucose removed from the bloodstream is also decreased) which can be increased through medications such as Metformin or a nutritional supplement known as alpha lipoic acid. Now the glucose has accelerated more into our muscles and fat cells than into our cells and brain. This can happen at 150 pounds or 275 pounds depending on the person and his or her biochemistry. Next the muscles slow down in the insulin transport of glucose, so the best option for the body turns out to be transporting the glucose into fat cells. The muscle cells in addition to our other body cells have become more insulin resistant. The last to become insulin resistant are the fat cells, so if we are susceptible, we will gain weight until our fat cells become insulin resistant. We may weigh 350 pounds but we may still not be that bad in terms of insulin resistance in the fat cell systems. We keep gaining weight because we haven't reached insulin resistance with our fat cells. Or we can be that 175 pounds and already be insulin resistant everywhere. Once all three systems become significantly insulin resistant, the blood sugar (blood glucose) levels may rise to the point where we are considered pre-diabetic. The insulin from the pancreas responding to the glucose in the bloodstream can no longer do its job. When levels of glucose go even higher in the bloodstream, diabetes can occur irrespective of whether you are fat or skinny. There is however more of a correlation between diabetes and being overweight for other biochemical reasons.

A Tip in Preventing Intestinal Yeast Infections

Sugar can have detrimental effects on aggravating heart disease and cancer. It also can be a problem in some of us if we acquire an intestinal yeast infection because yeast such as Candida albicans love sugar. I should warn you that traditional allopathic medical doctors don't believe in intestinal yeast infections even though they do accept oral and vaginal yeast infections. As a scientist having experienced the effects of yeast, I am a believer. It's a lot more difficult to get rid of something than to acquire something. Some people say that about their marriages. Yeast in your large intestine can wreak havoc on you in similar ways that heavy metal contamination with mercury can. Or yeast can cause similar symptoms as a low thyroid or having the low blood sugar levels of hypoglycemia. A couple of the telling signs of yeast are bloating and brain fog but stool cultures and blood tests are needed to confirm an intestinal yeast infection. Mine was confirmed in 1991 at the Atkins Center. Yeast are very difficult to eliminate and a doctor who knows what he is doing is required. Intermixed with all of this is yeast allergy and the possibility of what I call yeast psychiatry. You may suffer clinical depression from the yeast and your family doctor may tell you that you need a psychiatrist. Chances are that you will need to go on a restricted carbohydrate diet.

While you are killing off the yeast and building your immune system to attack the yeast from the inside of your body outwards, you need to replace your intestinal tract with what we call good bacteria. When the yeast take over they replace all your good bacteria. Back in the early nineties, we compared a bunch of commercial products for their good bacteria. It turned out that many of the commercial products had no live bacteria or were contaminated. We never published this work but you do need a product with live bacteria like that found in some organic yogurts in order for the bacteria to attach and adhere to the intestinal wall. I still use one of these products today. It's called Kyo-Dophilus. I assure you that I have no stock in the company. There are others and you can ask your Health Food Store to recommend a product.

My tip is for prevention of yeast. The use of broad spectrum antibiotics that kill a wide variety of bacteria (both gram positive and gram negative bacteria) can alter the bacterial flora composition in the intestinal tract making it easier for yeast to take hold. Every time you take a pill of your broad spectrum antibiotic, you need to follow that one and a half hours to two hours later with two Kyo-Doplilus capsules or a similar product. You let the antibiotic first go through your digestive system and then follow a couple of hours later with the good bacteria. The antibiotic each time you take it is destroying good bacteria and you need to replace it with new good bacteria. The use of good bacteria seems also to help with vaginal yeast infections.

Conclusion

Many years ago before we all were born, the sweet taste was satisfied by the berries that our ancestors picked in the wild. Today sugar has become a staple of the American diet and our children love it. The refinement of white sugar from sugar cane is the culprit and we have gotten accustomed to the sweet taste. Food producers place sucrose or glucose or sugar derivatives like corn syrup into a majority of the products found on supermarket shelves. You might ask the question, "What is it about sugar that we like?" I'll leave you with a brief badly designed experiment that was conducted with baby rats. researchers placed the rat pups on a hotplate and the pups only lasted a few seconds before jumping off the hot plate. If the scientists pre-fed the pups sugared-water, the pups were able to stay on the hotplate significantly longer. The conclusion was that sugar stimulates the rat and presumably our endorphin system which distracts us from the pain. Anything in life that gives us an endorphin high in life makes us feel good. Yet every action has a reaction and their our costs for pursuing the good life.

Since kicking out Bipolar Disorder out of my body in the late 1990s, I returned from a five-year long term disability to my professorship at Stony Brook University in August of 2000. During my scientific career, I published seventy-five articles in peer reviewed scientific journals including seven patents. I worked for another six years until I retired in July 2006 and we moved from Long Island to Florida.

Botox for Migraines More Than Disappoints

Botox was approved for use in the treatment of chronic migraine headaches in 2010 but recent research has called its effectiveness into question.

A study, published April 24, 2012, in the Journal of the American Medical Association(1), found that Botox had no benefit for those with episodic migraines that occur less than 15 times a month, or chronic tension headaches that occur more than 15 times a month.

The recent article showed only a slight decrease in the number of migraine headaches per month, with the effect limited to patients who had attacks at least every other day; patients with 15 or more migraine attacks each month suffered, on the average, two less headaches each month while on Botox treatment.

Even more alarming is that one study stated that botulinum toxin can travel along neurons from the injection site into the brain, at least in lab animals(2). Botulinum is one of the deadliest neurotoxins found in nature. This information certainly warrants more study before we continue to proclaim it safe for humans.

Understandably, Botox is big business. A $1.59 Billion business, 50% of which is directed toward medical uses. I have to call into question big pharma on this one.

I understand how frustrating chronic headaches can be for the average person. Once life threatening conditions like AV malformations, metabolic conditions and brain tumors are ruled-out people find themselves looking at taking pills for the rest of their lives to stave off the headaches.

This is completely unacceptable. Not only are migraine medications inherently a band-aid approach but they have plenty of unwanted side-effects. I've also found it common for medications of various classes of medications to simply stop working over time. Imagine watching your treatment opportunities becoming more and more limited over the years as you run out of options.

This is where functional medicine and neurology can come together to provide a detection and treatment option tailored to the individual.

Functional medicine is the science of studying patterns in lab work and applying natural methods to resolve problems. This approach to migraines seeks to help the brain and body work properly and naturally. Functional medicine does not take a "wait and see" view but attempts to be proactive. By getting to the heart of the problem it can become easier to root out the underlying causes and possibly eliminate headaches altogether.

Migraines Causes And Relief

I always pronounced this debilitating problem as my grain where some call it a me grains but whatever you call it, it is a head ache and there are millions of people in this world that suffer from it.

There are a number of treatments and some people will believe certain things give you relief where others don't and vice versa.

MIGRAINES could be part of our modern day living. We all know someone that suffers from migraines and they can suffer different systems. My own mother used to suffer from them and she was always taking a product called APC. Many pharmaceutical companies made this relief in previous years. In fact she would often carry an APC around in her Apron. She died aged 85 and not from renal failure that was a problem with PHENACITIN which was replaced when found to cause renal failure. My friend Roger as young as he was would suffer so bad that he would return from work lock himself up in a closed dark room and vomit for 2 days. When he finally left his room he would be totally drained.

Many problems today are associated with life style. If you have a look at the causes of migraines you will notice if you have a decent well balanced regular meal and have a good night's sleep most of those causes will go.

Treatment for Migraines: Un-Risky Ideas for Effective Relief

Finding effective treatments for migraines can be challenging to say the least - but it doesn't have to drive you to the brink of insanity, nor does it require risky or potentially harmful medications or procedures.

Often, doctors will prescribe any of a variety of medications - from those that are supposed to bring relief by masking symptoms, to those that attempt to prevent the onset of a migraine episode.

There are over 100 medications that a doctor can choose from and nearly endless combinations of them. The list is ever-evolving and a migraine patient can quickly feel like they've become a prescription medicine guinea pig as they are prescribed one thing after another.

However, many of the very medications that are intended to make things better end up making things worse when you consider their side effects - and they can all pose a huge risk to one's health in a many ways.

A person taking these medications can develop rebound headaches - where the medication actually causes migraines. Not only that, if they were to discontinue taking the medications abruptly that can cause migraines as well.

Amidst all of the traditional medications that Western medicine has to offer, even the most savvy and experienced doctor can end up running out of ideas... then what can be done when that happens?

This is no way to live and certainly cannot be the only or best approach to treating migraines. Here are several other ideas, among many, that you can try:
Start by knowing what your triggers are and avoid them at all costs
Losing weight and becoming just a little more physically active can effectively ward off the next migraine episode.
Investigate whether or not you may have a gluten intolerance. Some have found that by avoiding products high in gluten have seen a significant reduction in migraines.
Oxygen has been used to treat those who experience cluster headache patients and some specialists believe it can be effective for migraine patients. Speak with your physician, neurologist, or pain specialist and perhaps they can prescribe oxygen on a trial basis to determine if it can make a difference for you.
Therapeutic massage has proven to be an effective treatment for migraines as well. Try starting with one massage every one or two weeks.
In the midst of a migraine, use ice and heat interchangeably in the areas where you feel the most pain or throbbing sensations.
Ask your doctor if you could try a TENS unit - a small battery-operated device that has sticky pads that are strategically placed on the outside of your body. The device emits gentle electrical impulses to stimulate and relax muscles in a target area.
The use of dietary supplements - such as coenzyme Q10, magnesium, or vitamin B2 - can be effective in the prevention of migraines.
Along with activating specific pressure points on your head, pinching the top of your nasal passage, temple, or behind your ear can relieve pain.
Sleeping with a buckwheat hull pillow can help you get better sleep and could support your head and neck in a way that prevents the likeliness of migraines.
Don't be afraid to try different neurologist or pain specialist. Ask your primary care physician for a referral if you suspect that a change could be beneficial.

Can Migraines Really Kill?

When people think of migraines, they usually just think of the pain. But migraines are more than just pain. They are a serious neurological disease. And they can kill you. Now, of course, most of the time a migraine will just send you to your room to lie in the dark in agony for the remainder of the day, but sometimes it is much more serious than that. If your migraine is escalating and not giving more than four hours of relief during the course of 72 hours, you are experiencing status migrainous.

This dangerous condition is associated with an increased risk of stroke, and needs immediate medical attention. If you experience this, you should go to the emergency room and ask for a brain scan. You may be having a migrainous stroke, also called a migrainous infarction. Never heard of that term before? You're not alone. Most people who don't suffer from migraines, and even many who do, aren't aware of the serious nature of the disease. But it is real. Just ask the friends and family of a 21 year old woman named Abi who died of amigrainous stroke in October 2001. Or ask Mark Ellis, a 22 year old father who suffered a stroke as a result of a migraine and was left completely paralyzed and unable to communicate.

The term migrainous infarction refers to a stroke caused by a migraine, when other causes of stroke can be excluded. Like any stroke, you need to pay attention to warning signs and get help right away to avoid permanent or even fatal consequences. Here are the signs you need to look for:

A very sudden onset of a severe headache. This is also known as a "thunderclap headache."You feel like you are having the worst headache of your lifeDizziness, difficulty walking in a straight lineGarbled speechDifficulty understanding words being spoken to youWeakness/Numbness in the face, arm and/or leg on one side of the bodyDouble Vision

Although they are relatively uncommon, migrainous strokes do happen, and sometimes they have fatal outcomes. In addition, just having migraines with aura gives a person a six-fold increase risk of ischemic stroke ( a different type of stroke than a migrainous stroke). It is a sad, chilling warning to those with migraines and their loved ones. If your migraine is getting that bad, get to the hospital right away. It might just save your life. But more importantly, focus on knowing your migraine triggers and learning how to avoid getting one in the first place.

Treating Migraines With Nutrition

Nearly ten percent of Americans are affected by migraines. Migraines typically are when the blood vessels in the brain dilate and thus cause inflammation and intra cranial pressure. They can be very painful and paralyzing. Causes of migraines may be:

1. Too much or too little sleep
2. Excessive estrogen surplus for women during menstrual cycle (over all women are more likely to have migraines than men)
3. Poor diet
4. Response to certain meditations
5. Physical trauma
6. Emotional trauma

Often times migraines are triggers by multiple causes. When it comes to diet, there are ways to treat migraines and it's best to plan ahead. Here are nutrients or compounds that are known to help prevent migraines:

- Ever hear the phrase metal head? No, it's not about music. Magnesium is a metal that the body builds up in the head to reinforce the cranial structure preventing the effects of head trauma. I'm just kidding. It is about music. Magnesium deals with the nerves, helping them function properly and may be one of the greatest nutrients there is to prevent migraines. It is a metal that is utilized in a large number of natural chemical reactions in the body. It generally accompanies fiber in foods and can be found in bran (oats, wheat, and rice), dried herbs, seeds (pumpkin, watermelon, etc), soy beans, molasses, many nuts, avocado, beans, broccoli, spinach, bananas, kiwi, many meats, and many fishes.

- Vitamin D is known to prevent migraines, is actually considered to be a hormone and is crucial for the health. It is manufactured in the body from cholesterol by mixing UVB (not UVA) rays from the sun or certain types of tanning booths. It's best to get 10 to 15 minutes of sun exposure a day. Additional vitamin D can be found in fish, some oatmeal's, mushrooms, soy, many kinds of cereal, milk, and can also come from supplements (vitamin D3 is the most natural kind of Vitamin D). Still, light and consistent sun or UVB exposure is being uncovered as the best and most natural way to get vitamin D and other minerals.

- Large amounts of riboflavin (Vitamin B2) have been known to prevent migraines. Sources of riboflavin include mushrooms, spinach, peppers, squash, beans, sweet potato, asparagus, cabbage, broccoli, pumpkin, mustard, chives, artichoke, turnips, tomato, cauliflower, peas, onions, eggs, liver, marmite, dried herbs and spices like paprika or chili powder, Almonds, soybeans, cheese, and fish.

- Caffeine is a drug stimulant that may be used to increase the speed effectiveness of other drugs, including aspirin. Many drugs, like aspirin, already have doses of caffeine in them for this purpose. By itself, caffeine relaxes the blood vessels, may stop inflammation, and is most commonly found of coffee, dark chocolate, and soda.

Found in foods such as fish, or available as a supplement, omega-3 is said to help lessen inflammation experienced during a migraine attack.

As we can see, if more traditional treatments have for migraines have failed, there are plenty of alternatives available in the form of natural remedies. Of course, I can't guarantee which, if any, will work for you. However, I can say they do appear to work for some. So why not try them out? Many of those who suffer from migraines would never consider the fact that what they eat or drink could actually be the very cause of their problem. To control and understand what specific food item or items set off your own migraine, the first step would be to write down or make a note of what you ate or drank prior to a migraine/headache. Do this over a period of time and you'll be able to eliminate the guilty foods from your diet without sacrificing other foods which you may enjoy.

Non-Specific Diet Trigger

It is also worth remembering that controlling your diet is not only beneficial to reducing your migraines and headaches, but will also have a positive effect on your overall health, however a word of warning don't think skipping meals or fasting is a way of dieting because this may have an adverse effect and probably cause or trigger a migraine.
