Acne can be a particular problem for teenagers. It can adversely affect the young person's social life and lower their self-esteem. With the right approach and knowledge regarding the causes and treatment of acne, teenagers can overcome this scourge of their adolescent years.
What are the causes of acne?
The causes of our acne start deep within our bodies. There are two main causes:
An imbalance that is caused when the biochemical regulators that control our hormones are not working correctly. This is particularly acute for adolescents whose bodies are going through great physical and hormonal changes.A build up of toxins within our bodies. These toxins come from two main sources. The first, especially during adolescence, is from the hormonal balance. The second cause is the food and drink we consume.
One effect of this hormonal imbalance is to cause the sebaceous glands in the skin to excrete excess sebum, which makes the skin oily and the pores prone to clogging. Bacteria that are on the skin naturally can cause the blocked pores to become inflamed, resulting in an acne breakout.
Adolescent bodies have difficulty in eliminating the toxins that have built up. One way it does this is through the skin. These toxins mixed the sebum and bacteria in blocked pore are another source of acne breakouts.
Teenage Acne Treatment
Peer group pressure is very strong amongst adolescents and so is the desire to conform to the image of their role models. These role models have perfect, clear complexions. Teenagers have no shortage of advice from the numerous glossy magazines devoted to their interests and which are a ready source of advertisements for proprietary topical treatments promising a rapidly cure their acne.
Such treatments satisfy a teenager's need to emulate their role model's clear complexion and to boost their self-esteem. The results are, however, short-lived because these treatments do not treat the main causes of acne. Despite this, there is a place for such treatments for teenagers because they give a lift to the young person's self-esteem and that is important.
Treating the real causes not the symptoms
Treating the real causes of acne requires the individual to make some serious choices about his or her diet and lifestyle. This includes:
#1. A healthy balanced diet that is high in fresh fruit and vegetables, but contains few processed or snack foods because these are usually high in fat, sodium and refined sugars. The "typical" teenager's diet is the antithesis of what is required to remove the hormonal imbalance and detoxify his or her body.
#2. Proper hydration. Our bodies need about two litres of water a day to function normally. Try to drink about 8 glasses of water spread out throughout each day. Many teenagers consume too little water and too much sugar sweetened sodas. The latter are one of causes of the toxins and also contribute to obesity because of the large number of calories they contain.
If your body is properly hydrated, you get a double win. Not only does it help your body to eliminate more toxins through your kidneys, it also improves the texture and appearance of your skin.
Here are three simple lifestyle changes that teenagers can also make to help eradicate their acne:
Turn off the games console, computer and TV and get outside in the sunlight and take some exercise. Sunlight might not dry up your spots, but being outside for at least 20 minutes during the daytime will boost your vitamin D, which your body makes from sunlight.Playing games or sport outdoors will also make you feel better and reduce stress. Stress is known to make an existing acne outbreak worse, so it makes sense to reduce your stress levels.
Have you noticed that your outbreaks are worse in the mornings after a poor night's sleep? Avoid this by getting at least six to eight hours good quality sleep each night.
Teenage acne may not go away completely until the end of adolescence, but the dietary and other lifestyle changes described here that all teenagers can make will greatly reduce their acne outbreaks and may even prevent them altogether.
