If you suffered with acne as a child you know how frustrating it can be. The attempts to get rid of acne overnight, waking up hoping your skin will be clear only to find out another breakout has occurred; the list of problems goes on and on. What most people don't know is that you need to treat acne gently. There are a variety of ways to go about preventing and treating acne, but any of them taken too far can do more damage than good.
This is especially true when it comes to our bathing habits. We all know that acne is a skin condition and that keeping our skin clean and healthy is crucial if we are going to defeat the disease. What most people don't realize, however, is that the approach they are taking to keeping their skin clean may in fact be making it worse.
When it comes to cleaning our skin and bathing we need to look/think beyond the surface. Just because you found a super high-power soap or body wash does not mean it is automatically going to help you rid your skin of acne symptoms. If the soap or body wash alters your skin's Ph too dramatically, it can throw things out of whack and make the acne worse. It is for this reason you need to research the Ph of the soaps you are using and use lotions/oils that can offset any dramatic Ph imbalance your soap/bodywash may cause.
The next thing you need to pay attention to is the water temperature of the shower/bath you are using. We all know hot water feels good, and since heat opens our pores we think that must be a good thing in terms of letting the bacteria out and getting the toxins off our skin. This is not necessarily true though. Running a shower or bath with too hot of water can have the opposite effect on your skin and therefore you acne. If the water is too hot it can cause inflammation and tenderness. This can, in turn, lead to further acne outbreaks and reddening of the skin. Our point here is that you can take nice warm showers, but don't go overboard with the hot water.
The last thing you need to pay attention to is how hard you scrub your skin. You would think that scrubbing as hard as possible would allow you to get deep in those pores to get the bacteria and toxins out. Once again this logic is wrong. Scrubbing too hard also causes inflammation, and can cause pores to open that would not otherwise open. It can also lead to scabs, which can lead to permanent scarring. Instead of scrubbing hard, simply scrub as if you did not have acne. Just be thorough and make sure to reach all affected areas well. If you follow these three tips, you should be well on your way to as healthy of skin as possible.
