Acne, Its Causes and Treatments

What is acne

Acne is the skin disease caused by the oil glands of our skin. Our skin has some tiny holes known as pores. Both, skin pores and oil glands, are attached to each other through small canals (follicles). These follicles are responsible for the flow of oil, produced by glands, to the pores. Follicle is also responsible for the growth of small hair out of our skin. When the follicle is blocked pimple start growing.

Causes of acne

Development of acne is associated with following factors.

Bacteria

Inside the skin some bacteria reside. These cause redness of skin and irritation. These bacteria also generate some enzymes which make this redness and inflammations (irritation) worse. This irritation then continues to appearance of acne on our skin.

Abnormal growth of cells inside skin

The abnormal growth of cells in hair follicle causes the formation of black head. This black head stops normal movement of different materials inside the skin and make the follicle to swell and finally rupture. This ruptured follicle throws all of its contents into the skin and causes the swelling and redness of the skin.

Male and female hormones

Androgens and estrogens, male and female hormones respectively, are also an additional factor for the growth of acne. These hormones affect the sebaceous glands and make them enlarged. Due to increase in size of these glands more oil is produced, which provides more food to bacteria. Thus acne is caused in young boys and girls.

Genetic

These days development of acne is also considered due to some genetic factor. It is found that acne runs in some families. The genetic factor causing acne is still a question mark.

Unusual factors

Following unusual factors are also seen in some patients.

Pressure

It is seen that continuous pressure of any strip, collar, scarfs etc. on our skin also causes acne especially in summer.

Cosmetics

Cosmetics containing no water content cause blocking of our skin pores. Closing of skin pores is major reason for development of pimples or acne.

Acne Treatment

Following measures can be taken to treat acne or pimples.

Life style

Life style of a person affects the growth of acne. Good food and proper sleep helps in proper working of hormones which prevents acne to grow.

Popping and squeezing

Pimples may grow if these are squeezed or pop up. The bacteria from our hands can attack our infected area and may worsen the condition.

Cleansing of skin

Cleansing of skin properly is very helpful to avoid chance of acne. For cleansing scrubs and peel off masks are available in the market. Scrubs contain granules which on rubbing remove the blackheads and open the pores. Peel off masks do the same.

Use of gels and lotions to kill bacteria

Bacteria are one of the factors causing acne problem. Many gels, lotions and creams are available in market to apply on the skin. These contain agent to kill surface bacteria.

Cosmetics and pore strips

Acne appears when our pores are closed. Use of good foundation containing water content also helps to combat pimples. Due to presence of water it does not blocks pores, which then prevents blackheads to generate. Pore strips are also in markets for this purpose. These strips can be used on any part to remove black heads.

Home remedies

Toothpaste and vinegar are also very helpful for acne treatment. Same is the benefit of washing face with cold water at least twice a day especially after sweating. Avoid using towel and soap of infected person is also useful to avoid pimples.

Visit to dermatologist

If pimples become the problem for long then best solution is to visit a dermatologist. Although many products are easily available in the market but these may not help out everyone. At the same time it is possible that what we are taking as acne, is not acne. Only a dermatologist can tell us.
